Studio Parasite

Problem: An artist, writer and designer by the name of Aria Dean is hosting an exhibition and would like a poster designed to promote her exhibition. The poster must be type based and contain traces of the artist's work.

Target Audience: The demographic of people for this show are between 18-26 years of age and dominantly minorities. The shows focus champion subcultures, the younger cohort of this demographic is heading towards more fine arts or creative fields while the older cohort hold occupations in these fields.

Solution: Designing a poster which is 24x36 in dimensions. I found Aria Dean’s view of what she called “Blackness” or African American
Culture to be thought provoking in the sense that she argued that African American Culture has influenced the dominant culture in many ways.
She pointed to rap music as an example and expanded on how this subculture was influenced by Cannabis. Creating an installation utilizing a UV lamp she placed a box of soil and a growing plant in the middle. I found this to be conceptually saturated and built upon the idea and also adapting it into a visual form. The ray of light being the focus point contains the exhibition name.
